Are You Ready?

This whole eclipse phenomenon that is occurring on August 21st 2017 is the most talked about occurrence since the election. People are making travel plans, closing businesses, cancelling schools, and looking for the all important eclipse glasses. It is crazy the hype that has stirred up. I got to thinking, if the world knew Jesus was coming back at 12 noon on that day, how many people would prepare to meet Him? Another thought, what holds a person back from knowing Him now?

August 21st is going to be a crazy day. I have heard millions of people are going to view the eclipse. People have been preparing  from getting the proper eye protection to emergency management planning on how handle the problems that occur when millions of people gather to witness a phenomenon. I even read where grocery stores are gathering up extra milk and bread like a snowstorm is coming. Honestly, to me, it’s a little ridiculous. Why do we prepare so hard for a 5 minute occurrence, yet when it comes to preparing for eternity we put it off and don’t take it seriously?

I just wonder what people really would do if they knew the exact time Jesus was coming? Would they run to the nearest church building and ask to be baptized? Would they start attending church services and praying more? Would they become more “religious”? Our Lord says in Mark 7:7, “And in vain do they worship Me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.” When we follow the commandments of men instead of God’s instructions, our worship becomes vain. If our worship is vain, it is empty and useless. It will do us no good. If it is vain, it would be as though we had not worshipped God at all and we will be lost. When we worship in the way we want then God is insulted.

Why are you not preparing for eternity? Does going to heaven sound horrible to you? If you haven’t obeyed the gospel then your saying heaven is not important to you. You are saying God is not that important. You are saying your happiness is more important than what Jesus did on the cross for you. One day Jesus will come back, except we won’t have a warning. I am reminded of the passage in Matthew 7:21-23, “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven. Many will say to Me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?’ And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness! Can you imagine hearing those words, “depart from me, I never knew you”?

What are you doing to prepare for eternity? Where will you go when this life is over: eternal life in Heaven or eternal punishment in Hell? Tomorrow may be too late.  Satan wants us to wait because he wants us to be lost.  God’s word says, “Behold now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation” 2 Corinthians 6:2. Do you really want to go to Heaven? I would hope everyone would want to, but not everyone is prepared too.
