A Look Back At 2017

As 2017 comes to a close, I find myself thinking back to the last 12 months.

The New Year is a time for reflection and decision making. It is also a time for making resolutions. People attempt to change habits, attitudes, and even the direction of their lives. Personally, I do not make resolutions. I have never seen the point. I just try to be a better person than I was yesterday, which is a job in itself.

As I think back in 2017, I have done a couple things that have been good for me. One thing was, I started writing this blog. It has helped strengthen my faith and hopefully has helped those who have read it. I thought everyone could use encouragement, so I started writing. I also started a new job and I found it to be better fit for me personally. It was the right decision for me. I have put more focus on studying God’s Word so I can be a better teacher and Christian. Prayer and study time has definitely got me through all areas in my life, especially the difficult times. God provides opportunities to come to Him.

So with that being said, a new year comes with what I think is one of the greatest opportunities. It is to renew our commitment to God. In our busy lives, God often gets overlooked as we go about our days. But God asks us to put Him first in all things we do. Consider Matthew 6:33, “But seek first the kingdom of God and all these things shall be added to you.” The promise is that if we put God first, the worries of everyday life can be lifted, leaving us to focus on serving Him better and more completely. I love this verse. It’s very comforting in this ole world. Anyone who truly seeks God first, in all areas of their life, will never regret it.

God has given to us a brand new year. The old year with all of its problems, with all of its mistakes, and even with all of its victories is gone. Last year is behind us and now we are on the threshold of a wonderful new year. As we approach 2018, let’s remember to look to God’s Word for direction, instruction, and encouragement. What will you do with the new year?
