Roadblocks: Heed the Warning

We all have witnessed some kind of roadblock while driving. There are the roadblocks set up to stop drunk drivers from getting any further down the road. Also, most of us have seen a roadblock due to flood waters from a heavy rain. Sadly though, we have also seen the news where people did not heed the warnings of the roadblock and were swept away or had to be rescued. There is a great spiritual lesson to learn here. Why roadblocks are so important in our lives.

When we see these roadblocks, we are always wondering, how can we get around it? Sometimes we insist on doing things that we think are best for us, but it really isn’t. Most people don’t like to be told what to do or how to do it. I know because I used to be this way. I thought roadblocks were a big inconvenience for me and what I wanted. I want you to think about this. When it comes to roadblocks, what is God protecting us from? Hell, he is protecting us from Hell. God doesn’t want us to go to Hell so he has set up roadblocks to stop us, to get our attention, to get us to turn around, to put our trust in Him.

One roadblock God uses is His written Word. I love the verse in 2 Timothy 3:16, “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.” It’s our instruction manual for this life. The Bible is how He speaks to us today.

People will read every how-to-book and every cookbook to make sure everything is the right way, but when it comes to their spiritual life, they ignore God’s Word and do things their way. People will study text book after text book to pass that crucial test, but what about the final exam on Judgment Day? I would hate to stand before God at the end of my life and be judged by a book I never read or studied. John 12:48 reminds us of this, “He who rejects Me, and does not receive My words, has that which judges him—the word that I have spoken will judge him in the last day.” Listen to God through His Word.

The greatest testament of His love is that He died for everyone of us. He wants you to be His child. God only wants to keep you on the right path. He is not here to hinder you; He is here to assist you in knowing what road to take. Why are people not listening? Again, because people want to do what they want to do. They want to break through that roadblock because people feel they don’t need Him. Turning it all over to God gives me peace and a calmness I have never felt. Yes, i still have roadblocks. I am human, I make mistakes, but in my Christian journey I have learned I cannot do this life alone nor do I want to.

God sees what is ahead in our lives.  Have you ever thought He could be preventing us from doing something we will regret? He could know that there will be sadness or despair should we choose to go through that roadblock He has placed in our path. Unfortunately, if we insist in going past God’s roadblock’s we could reap the consequences of our choice. Friend, again, He does not want that.

So, the next time there is a roadblock, turn to your personal tour guide, God, and He will direct your ways. Nahum 1:7 says, “The LORD is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble; and He knows those who trust in Him.” Don’t push through into dangerous waters. Stop and ask yourself, “What’s God protecting me from?” Is what’s beyond the roadblock worth the loss, the pain or suffering? Turn to God before it’s too late. He is waiting for you.
