There is so much about the Old Testament that I love to read and study. The Old Testament is full of stories from our youth and as we get older we tend to learn more in depth about the Bible. I have heard several different sermons on this portion of scripture, and it’s one those passages that has a bright yellow highlighter across its powerful words. We are talking about the words in Proverbs 6:16-19. (NKJV), “These six things the Lords hates, Yes, seven are an abomination to Him.” A proud look, A lying tongue, Hands that shed innocent blood, A heart that devises wicked plans, Feet that are swift in running to evil, A false witness who speaks lies, and one who sows discord among brethren.” So, what does this passage mean?
God is not only a loving God, but he can hate as well. He has great love for certain things and hate for others. This passage above is just some of the things he hates. What is the definition of hate? Hate is to dislike intensely or passionately, feel extreme aversion for or extreme hostility toward, to detest. What about the word abomination? The word abomination means anything greatly disliked or abhorred, to detest. These are powerful words. If the Lord hates these things we need to pay close attention and understand what these verses mean.
A Proud Look: This describes a person who thinks that they all that and likes to look down on others. Someone is a know-it-all or who thinks they are better than everyone else. We might also describe this person a being arrogant or haughty. These kinds of people will put down others to make themselves feel important superior. People with this description like this don’t like to proven wrong. The bible has several verses on pride. Psalm 10:4 (NKJV) The wicked in his proud countenance does not seek God; God is in none of his thoughts. In the new testament 2 Timothy 3:1 (NKJV) But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come: For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having a form of godliness but denying its power. And from such people turn away! For of this sort are those who creep into households and make captives of gullible women loaded down with sins, led away by various lusts, always learning and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth. Very powerful verse. God hates a proud look and the attitude that comes with it. Pride keeps thousands away from Christ today. Don’t let pride or a proud look keep you from heaven. Strive for humility.
A Lying Tongue: Lying has been around since the days of Adam and Eve. Today lying is not thought of as anything major. Lying is telling false statements, deceiving, and being untruthful. Lying always comes from an impure heart, not thinking about God in their speech or thoughts. Lies always hurt. They destroy good names, disappoint, and hurt others and God. It is so prevalent in our society that there are categories of lies. You have the white lie, the beneficial lie, the malicious lie and the deceptive lie. In Gods eyes, a lie is a lie, not matter how you tell it or what it involves. God says in Revelation 21:8 (NKJV) But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.” This should scare us to not be partakers of the world by lying. So even if you don’t see any harm in your harmless lies surely you can see from this passage that if you continue lying, no matter the reason, you could find yourself in the lake of fire. Satan is the father of lies and loves to draw people into lying in any way. Don’t give into lying.
Hands That Shed Innocent Blood: This is talking about murder or taking the life of another who is innocent. It is usually committed because of selfishness, revenge, greed, or hatred. There is so much murder in this world. We see murders of innocent people every day. Murders happen every day and it’s all over the news and newspapers constantly. What about the millions of babies aborted in this world? The killing of the innocent. God hates laws that don’t protect the innocent and those who cannot defend themselves. God hates hands that shed innocent blood.
A Heart That Devises Wicked plans. This describes a person who has wicked heart who is always thinking and planning something mischievous to do to someone. They enjoy hurting others, A life like this is, the person is spiritually rotten inside. The Lord would have us to have pure hearts. Matt. 5:8 (NKJV), “Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.” You must wonder what kind of person would devise and do such wicked things. I cannot not imagine being a person that would want to do such evil to someone. If we put on minds on studying Gods Word, we won’t have time to devise such wicked things. It is not pleasing to God and something he hates.
Feet That Are Swift In Running To evil: This is someone who is running about causing trouble and wanting to do evil or wickedness. In this world, people run to get into mischief without considering the consequences. Isaiah 59:7 (NKJV) Their feet run to evil, And they make haste to shed innocent blood; Their thoughts are thoughts of iniquity; Wasting and destruction are in their paths. This person jumps at the opportunity to be involved in evil. This could be anything such as gossip or slander. A person who wants to do evil all the time, has no fear of God whatsoever. If you put your energy in running to learn more God instead of evil, imagine the good you could do,
A False Witness that Speaks Lies: Notice that this is the second time lying is in this list. If you didn’t know already how much God hates lying this should confirm that. Here it is saying, He hates those who say false things about other people. This could be through gossip, slander, or trying to ruin someone’s reputation. Psalm 101:5-6 (NKJV)Whoever secretly slanders his neighbor, Him I will destroy; The one who has a haughty look and a proud heart, Him I will not endure. My eyes shall be on the faithful of the land, That they may dwell with me ;He who walks in a perfect way, He shall serve me. Very powerful verse indeed.
And One Who Sows Discord Among The Brethren: This person tries to undo the good done by faithful brethren. But hatred and division can develop in both families and in the family of God when just one person makes life miserable for others. They could care less about peace, creating interference and interruption for the work of God. God hates this type of attitude and action because of how massively destructive and distracting it can be. God loves peace and unity. Christians must strive to “live peaceably with all men” (Rom.12:18), (NKJV)
As you have read here, there are things the Lord hates. When we think about our lives, do we do things that are pleasing to God or pleasing to self. These things listed above are not only sins against God, but sins against man as well.
